Trauma's Impact on Sensory Processing

Tuesday, November 4, 2025

Presented by Ventura and Oxnard College FKCE
Trainer Dr. Judy Sullivan Osterhage
Trauma doesn’t just affect emotions—it also changes the way the brain takes in and processes sensory information. Many children who have experienced trauma show sensory behaviors that are often misunderstood as defiance, hyperactivity, or withdrawal. In this training, we’ll explore how trauma disrupts sensory processing, why these behaviors may look confusing on the surface, and how to better recognize what’s really happening beneath them. Together, we’ll discuss practical, trauma-informed strategies to support sensory regulation and create a greater sense of safety and stability for children in your care.
Your Instructor: Dr. Judy Sullivan Osterhage is a Parent Coach Consultant with Parenting Matters & an Early Childhood Specialist. She holds a Doctorate in Elementary Education, and with that, has brought educational trainings to foster and adoptive parents for over 35 years!
