Elopement, Wandering & Runaways
Presented by FKCE
Instructor: Dr. Judy Sullivan Osterhage
Elopement, commonly known as wandering or running away, occurs when a child leaves a safe environment or moves away from a responsible caregiver. Children with disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, or trauma histories may be especially vulnerable, making it critical for resource parents to understand the risks and know exactly how to respond.
This training is designed to equip resource parents and caregivers with the knowledge and confidence they need to protect the children in their care. Through this class, participants will gain a deeper understanding of why children wander, what circumstances and environments increase their risk, and how to recognize early warning signs before an incident occurs. We will also explore the very real impact that elopement has, not just on the child, but on families and the broader community.
Participants will walk away with practical, proven prevention strategies and a clear plan for what to do in the event that a child in their care elopes. From home safety modifications to community resources and emergency response steps, this training will give you the tools and peace of mind to create a safer environment for every child in your home.
