Cultural Humility
Presented by FKCE and CASA of Ventura County
Instructor Nora Hayes
Develop the mindset and skills needed to build authentic relationships across cultures, identities, and lived experiences. In this training, participants will begin by gaining an understanding of the principles of cultural humility and how it differs from cultural competency. Participants will then reflect on how personal experiences, identities, and assumptions can influence interactions with others. As a result, this training will offer skills to strengthen engagement across differences with curiosity, respect, & openness, and identify practical strategies for fostering belonging and culturally responsive practices.
Your Instructors: Under the Ventura County Probation Agency, the Youth Equity Initiative (YEI) works to inform community and agency policy and practice; strengthen youth programs’ capacities; and increase youth and family access to coordinated, culturally responsive services through cross-system collaboration.
Kate English (they/them) is a longtime community leader and equity strategist with over two decades of experience advancing justice in Ventura County. They currently lead the Youth Equity Initiative at the Ventura County Probation Agency, working to shift public systems through youth voice inclusion, community co-design, and cross-sector collaboration. A former nonprofit director and lifelong advocate for LGBTQIA+ and immigrant communities, Kate has designed and facilitated transformative learning experiences for thousands of public servants and community-based leaders. Their work is rooted in Lilla Watson’s idea that our liberation is bound up with one another’s—and that lasting change begins with repairing past harm, building trust, and showing up in relationship again and again.
Lucas Saucedo is an equity-driven educator and public sector leader with over a decade of experience in municipal government and higher education. His work centers youth voice, especially from communities historically excluded from decision-making. Lucas brings expertise in state legislative advocacy, community engagement, socio-emotional learning, and education-based outreach. He is committed to co-creating solutions that are informed by those most impacted. Lucas is a proud double graduate of Cal Lutheran University
