Trauma and Thought Distortion
Presented by Foster and Kinship Care Education (FKCE)
Instructor: Dr. Judy Sullivan Osterhage
Children who've experienced trauma often develop distorted thought patterns that color the way they interpret the world around them, from misreading a caregiver's tone as threatening to assuming rejection before it happens. These patterns can look like defiance, anxiety, or overreaction, but they're often rooted in the brain's attempt to protect itself from further harm. This training helps resource parents understand the connection between trauma and cognitive distortion, giving you the knowledge to recognize these thought patterns for what they are and the tools to respond in ways that support healing rather than reinforce fear. By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
Understand the link between trauma and cognitive thought disorder
Define cognitive thought disorder and how it develops in children with trauma histories
Identify common cognitive distortions and learn strategies to help children shift these thinking patterns
Your Instructor: Dr. Judy Sullivan Osterhage is a Parent Coach Consultant with Parenting Matters & an Early Childhood Specialist. She holds a Doctorate in Elementary Education, and with that, has brought educational trainings to foster and adoptive parents for over 30 years!
