Complex Developmental Trauma describes both children's exposure to multiple traumatic events - often of an invasive, interpersonal nature - and the wide-ranging, long-term effects on children. Trauma can damage a child's ability to form relationships, manage their emotions, and see them selves as worthy of love. All children who are involved with the child welfare system have experienced trauma in some way. Often children who have experienced trauma have behaviors that can be challenging, confusing, and exhausting for the caring adults in their lives. These behaviors are often misinterpreted and misunderstood, which can lead to kids being punished and further isolated. Learn more about complex developmental trauma, the short- and long-term impact on children, and what kids need on their healing journey.
