In-Service CE: What the National Juvenile Justice Network (NJJN) Means for Youth in Ventura County
Presenter: Valeria Salazar
NJJN leads a membership community of 60 state-based organizations and numerous individuals across 42 states and D.C. and seeks to shrink the youth justice systems and transform the remainder into systems that treat youth and families with dignity and humanity. As a Fellow of their Youth Justice Leadership Institute 2019-2020 Cohort, Valerie Salazar had the opportunity to not only work on her own project within the County of Ventura, but also connect with advocates across the nation and collaborate on exciting programs and initiatives focused on youth justice reform. This CE will talk about work being done across the nation and how it can intersect with our teen population in Ventura County.
Valerie’s experience as a minor in juvenile halls, foster homes, group homes, and placements in Los Angeles and Ventura counties created a passion to advocate for youth affected by the system by making it more equitable, community based, and healing focused. She is currently a Commissioner on the County of Ventura Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention Commission, a Court Appointed Special Advocate for CASA of Ventura County, and an Ambassador for Ventura County’s Homes with Heart.
