Supporting the Supporters: Tools for Nervous System Regulation
Instructor: Lisa Hammond, CASA
Advocacy requires intense observation, emotional fortitude, and high-stakes decision-making. When your nervous system is regulated, you can process complex case details more clearly and respond to crises rather than react to them. In the high-stress environments of courtrooms and family visits, children often “borrow” the nervous system of the adults they trust. By maintaining your own internal calm, you provide a stable anchor for a child navigating a turbulent system.
Taking care of your nervous system isn’t just self-care—it’s a core component of being a reliable, effective voice for the child you represent.
Aerient classes combine simple movement, breathwork, and nervous system education to help you:
Reduce accumulated stress in the body
Improve focus and emotional regulation
Build resilience during demanding days
Develop practical tools you can use in real time
You do not need yoga experience, flexibility, or special equipment. Classes are beginner-friendly and designed to meet you where you are.
Trainer: Lisa Hammond has been a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer since early 2025 and brings a unique combination of advocacy experience, nervous-system education, and more than a decade of yoga and breathwork training to her work with CASA volunteers, caregivers, and community partners. Lisa has been part of the Aerient/Yoga For First Responders® team since becoming a certified YFFR instructor in 2021. Her work with Yoga For First Responders has given her a deep understanding of how stress affects the body, brain, decision-making, and our ability to remain present in challenging situations. Lisa came to yoga later in life, beginning her practice in 2012 at age 48 as a way to work with long-standing anxiety and depression. That experience sparked a passion for understanding how practices such as breathwork, meditation, and mindful movement can help people develop greater awareness and resilience. She became a certified Yoga For First Responders instructor in 2021 and completed Oxygen Advantage® Breathing for Yoga training in 2026. As both a CASA volunteer and an educator, Lisa is especially interested in the intersection of stress, regulation, relationships, and the ability to stay present when the stakes are high. Her goal is to offer practical, accessible tools that CASA volunteers, caregivers, and partners can use not only in their work with children and families, but also in caring for themselves.
